Henry is very special to us, as he is the first person to say “YES!” On our quest to finding visuals for our project, the first people we went to was those on our Instagram feed, our followers.
My name is Henry Aguilar, but I go by the name of Henry Ivany. My preferred style of photography is portrait and fashion photography. I started photography at the age of 12, right after the end of 8th grade.
What started my passion was a shot that I captured during the 4th of July celebrations. A small kid about the age of 5 walked past me, he started to tug on a man’s shirt next to him, whom I presumably thought was his father. The child sits on the shoulders of his father, looking up into the night sky, the Fireworks Show was about to begin. As soon as it did, the dim night filled up with bright colors. I looked back at the child who had his hand raised up at the sky pointing out the trail of fireworks and it almost seemed like the kid was making the fireworks burst by pointing at the sky, I just had to take a picture of that!
So, with my phone I opened up the camera app and aimed it at the child, resting on his father’s shoulders and he continued pointing at the sky with his finger, creating fireworks to light up the night sky by his command. That became my first photo with meaning and so began my passion for photography.
What makes me unique is that I don’t shoot just because it looks nice, I take photographs to show meaning in colour, the person, or mood of the shot taken. Everybody can take a picture but only a few can capture a moment in a frame.
My gear changes over time, as when I feel like I need a new challenge.
I strongly disbelieve that the better the gear, the better you are the taking photographs.
I believe what matters is your perspective and ambition for the art.
The most rewarding part of being a photographer, has to be when you finally get to share your work with others and you see them show or post it to others and then you’re just there, thinking “wow I took that”.
I was self-taught until I attended college.
My favourite works are the ones with neon lights, I love colours especially in dark ambiance locations. You can be really creative with shadows and depth of field.
My two top idols in photography has to be Lloyd Ziff and Linda McCartney.
I like to think I started on that special day on the 4th of July, which was 5 years ago.
Gear, models or location doesn’t matter, what matters, is your perspective.
